Playing an escape room is a great way to step into a unique type of adventure. At The Escape Effect, you can spend up to 2 hours exploring a new location and solving the puzzles within. That’s what makes escape room trips so much fun! There are so many different games to play, from Victorian murder mysteries to modern ghost adventures! It doesn’t get any better than this.

Or, maybe it does. Have you ever thought about adding a twist to your escape room trip? Here are some ideas on how you might add a little extra pizzazz to your next adventure.

Dress to impress

Escape room sets are designed to match the setting and story. Why not have your team dress up to match the escape room! Throw on an ulster and deerstalker cap, then head into a Sherlock Holmes-themed mystery. You don’t need to go all-out to have fun. Instead of donning a suit of armor, you can add a cloak to your outfit, to make breaking out of a medieval castle just that bit more dramatic.

Playing an escape room in costume is a great way to get into the story. If you want to add another layer of fun, you can also try roleplaying. Make up a character to suit the theme and play as them during the game. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the experience and add some fun to your escape room trip.

Beat the clock

Escape rooms have time limits. If you want to make it to the leaderboard, you need to make the most of your time. You can get competitive by trying to climb the leaderboard. How quickly can you make it through all of the challenges of the ancient Greek gods? Don’t worry about hints when you come to The Escape Effect. We don’t penalize players for asking for hints.

Is your team looking to add to the challenge but not worried about the leaderboard? Try shooting for a personal best or go head-to-head. Split your team in half and see which group can beat their escape room the fastest. You could even add an extra incentive to the competition by betting dinner on the outcome, all in good fun of course.

Add a team challenge

Here’s another idea for something you can do on your escape room trip: give your team a personal challenge. It’s like adding an additional mini-game to the room. This could be anything, with the only limit being your imagination, like self-imposed limits on what your team can say (without making the escape room itself harder). One example would be playing the Whose Line Is It Anyway? game, “Questions Only,” where your team has to phrase everything as a question.

If a team-wide challenge doesn’t suit your group, you can also add an individual challenge for everyone. For example, if you have one teammate who can get a bit heated during escape room trips, you could challenge them to stay composed. Other challenges can be tailored to suit your group’s dynamics. Add in a silly penalty for the first one to lose (or anyone that loses) and you can have a lot of fun.
