Every escape room uses a theme as the foundation for its story and setting. With thousands of games to play across the country, and even the world, naturally many ideas have been repeated and become more common than others.

From haunted houses to heists, let’s take a look at some of the most popular themes and how they’re used.

Archaeological Adventures

Exploring ancient ruins is always fun (apart from avoiding those bothersome booby traps), and if you love to fling on a fedora and go at it Indiana Jones-style, you’ll dig an archeological adventure! From Egyptian tombs to Aztec temples, prepare to get a little sand in your shoes as you search out important artifacts or uncover notes left from famed explorers. There may be hidden rooms to discover, or ancient curses to break, but whatever you do, remember, X never, ever marks the spot.

Haunted Houses

If you prefer something spookier, you’ll find an abundance of abandoned manor houses full of haunted heirlooms. You may even discover sinister secrets and late residents that never really left. Tip toe around each corner and be prepared to be scared with shocking surprises lurking in the shadows. There are even escape rooms based on popular horror movies, for the fearless film fans amongst us.

Thrilling Heists

One might think that an escape room would require players to escape from somewhere, but the heist is all about breaking into a building. Most spins on heist escape room themes feature immobilizing security systems to steal something valuable, or cracking codes to access off-limit areas. Don’t worry, you (probably) wont need to scale any buildings or be suspended by a wire to grab the goods, but you may need to break into a safe and get out before the time run out!

Murder Mysteries

Often inspired by the likes of Sherlock Holmes and the works of Agatha Christie, players will need to put on their thinking caps on in order to solve a crime. You’ll need quick wit and a keen eye to uncover clues and find the evidence you need to crack the case. Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with classic detective stories, while you might see a reference to the original works, all the information you need for success will be in the room.

Eerie Outbreaks

With so many popular zombie based television shows and movies, it’s no wonder they’ve become such a common escape room theme. Enthusiasts of the undead often spend a lot of time thinking about how they might survive an impending zombie apocalypse. Your goal might be to find a cure or simply just survive, so, if you’ve ever wondered about your own survival in the event of an outbreak, a zombie-themed escape room is the ideal opportunity to find out how you would fair.
