Eddie Murphy, Dana Carvey, Will Ferrell, Kenan Thompson, and the list goes on.  Saturday Night Live (SNL) has been making us laugh for over 40 years.  Occasionally, a skit uses mysteries as vehicles for the comedy.  If you’re an escape room fan and especially like the experiences that involve solving mysteries, you’ll surely love these SNL sketches.

Murder Mystery Dinner

Season 39, Starring Cecily Strong, Beck Bennett, Sasheer Zamata, and Jim Parsons.

Four friends visit a mystery dinner attraction.  It’s time to find out who is playing who.  Will you be a reporter, military officer, socialite, or Parsons’ character – “Simply Dudley, a harmless, oversexed nutball”?  It’s the tension between Dudley and the others that makes this skit hilarious.  I mean, why does everyone seem to be ok with Dudley dropping trou?

We certainly think a healthy suspension of disbelief is a good thing and there’s definitely parts of Dudley’s personality that would make playing an escape room something to remember, but we aren’t sure that those “fanny ticklers” fit precisely in certain mysteries like our 1890s Victorian whodunnit, Sherlock Studies.

The Hunch Bunch

Season 42, Starring Mikey Day, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, and Margot Robbie

If you’re thinking you’re looking at some live action form of the Scooby-Doo gang, you deserve a Scooby snack!

Becca Ashley, Margot Robbie’s character dressed in green, joins the gang to solve the cliche mystery.  It’s the combination of her ridiculous setups and the gang’s awkward, yet nostalgic reactions that make this skit a contender to be a classic years from now.

Not sure if we would want Becca Ashley to join us in an escape room, though.  After all, she didn’t know what to make of that secret passage.

Crime Scene

Season 37, Starring Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day

“What’s Seinfeld?”  Oh brother!  Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia plays a detective at the scene of a crime.  It’s no accident that the scene looks a lot like Jerry’s apartment because  that’s just the first of several strange quips Officer Dan Owens, played by Sudeikis, can’t believe from the Detective.

At first, we thought that we wouldn’t want to be paired up with the detective in an escape room, but then we remembered that none of our games require outside knowledge, so if you don’t know what baseball is, you’ll still do just fine here at The Escape Effect.
