Ready for fantastic family fun?
A child holds a colorful map.

Kids: Great searchers, may need snacks.

Family bonding activities are great for kids, and the experience is bound to boost their courage and confidence. They’ll feel valued, and leave feeling accomplished and ready to conquer the world!

Strengths

Kids are extremely observant, and tend to question everything around them. Still full of imagination and not yet cynical, they will immediately be immersed into the story of the game. Kids are excellent searchers, they’ll find and notice things that other family members might easily miss, especially in those hard to reach and lower down places.

Weaknesses

After the initial searching phase in the room is over, kids may start to get frustrated at the more difficult-to-solve challenges. They may get impatient when they feel like they have nothing more to contribute. Combat this by keeping them involved in every step of the problem-solving process. Oh, and they may also need refuelling regularly with snacks.

A teenager solves a math problem.

Teenagers: Cure those cries of ‘I’m bored’.

Teenagers are still learning how to navigate through life, and the skills used during your game will set them up for success in the real world. Teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and so many other awesome abilities, are all gained through playing escape rooms.

Strengths

Ah, to be young again. Teenagers are able to reach high, duck down low, squeeze into those tricky to access areas, and traverse through tunnels without getting out of breath like the rest of us. They have also likely recently encountered ridiculous math problems at school about how Timmy carried 146 watermelons home and dropped 5 every step of the way, that may prove useful in puzzle-solving.

Weaknesses

Teenagers are known for having a general disdain for their parents and siblings, so they may need some bribery to actually want to hang out with the family. Might we suggest the promise of pizza after your escape room experience? We guarantee that even if they’re reluctant to ever admit it, they’ll have fun hanging out with their folks at The Escape Effect.

Hands hold a distressed map, leading to potential treasure.

Parents: Masters of multitasking.

It’s a parent’s dream to have everyone in the family happy and enjoying time together. Escape rooms are also a great stress reliever, letting you temporarily forget life’s troubles, to focus on something else for a few minutes. Before inevitably remembering you need to decide what you’re cooking for dinner.

Strengths

Parents are generally pretty good at keeping everyone organized in day-to-day-life, so they are great delegating in escape rooms too. They’ll make sure everyone is on track, and ensure the overall success of the team by using their top time management skills, as they watch the clock count down.

Weaknesses

Rather than leaving each family member to themselves, parents may end up becoming being a busybody and wanting to get involved with every puzzle, even in a non-linear game. Once they take a step back, everyone is sure to thrive on their own, and work seamlessly together towards the end goal.

A hand sorts through puzzle pieces to find the right match.

Grandparents: They’ve seen it all before.

The older generation commonly like to keep their brain active with conventional challenges, like crosswords and jigsaw puzzles, and an escape room is basically all of these things rolled into one. We guarantee that they’ll also just love to be included in a family activity, where they get to spend time with their nearest and dearest.

Strengths

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. There is some wisdom that only comes with age, and your grandparents have it in abundance. Maybe they haven’t played a game quite like this before, but they have a wealth of knowledge that they’ll be able to apply to anything they come across in an escape room experience.

Weaknesses

Unfortunately many people in this age range find themselves with limited mobility, meaning that they’ll have to leave some of the more physically demanding parts of the room to the younger family members. But I’m almost positive they’ll be cheering from the sidelines and beaming with pride.
