The origins of Veterans Day
The end of the fighting of World War I was recognized at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. In the following years, England, France, and the U.S. buried one of their own, unnamed soldiers in a place of importance as a memorial gesture. 11/11 became known as Armistice Day.
Armistice Day became a national holiday, but the ideal behind “the War to end all wars” was not maintained.
Post World War II, A veteran named Raymond Weeks organized a parade on November 11 for what he called National Veterans Day. 7 years later, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming the date with its new name as a national holiday. And that’s what we’re celebrating these days!
